He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of deaths from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of animosity who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

The evident and direct reality that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a type of profound affection focused on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the determined opposition regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.
