The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
